A bathroom is a moisture-management project with a tile finish
What you see in a finished bathroom is tile, glass and fixtures. What decides whether it survives ten years is everything behind them: the backer board, the waterproofing layer, the slope of the shower floor and the fan that clears steam. When any of those is wrong, water gets into walls and the room fails slowly and expensively.
In Southwest Florida the stakes are higher. Warm, humid air carries moisture into every bathroom, and mold does not need much of an invitation. That is why we pay as much attention to the unglamorous layers as to the visible ones.
Because drywall is our trade, we also handle the part other remodelers outsource: the ceiling, the walls outside the wet zone, and the finished paint-ready surface that frames the tile.

Signs your bathroom needs more than a refresh
These problems usually mean the room needs rebuilding:
Soft spots or discolored caulk
Black caulk lines that return after cleaning, or a floor that gives near the tub, point to water behind the surface.
Cracked or loose tile
Tile moves when its substrate does. Loose tile in a shower is rarely a tile problem alone.
Peeling paint on the ceiling
Blistering paint over a shower means humidity is not leaving the room. Check the fan and its vent before repainting.
An outdated, cramped layout
A tub nobody uses, a door that hits the vanity, or no storage can be solved with a new plan.
Musty odor that cleaning does not remove
Odor from walls or floor suggests wet material. It needs to be opened and checked.
Accessibility needs
Curbless showers, wider doors and grab-bar blocking are far easier to build into a remodel than to bolt on later.
How a bathroom remodel runs with us
- Plan the layoutWe confirm fixture positions, door swings, storage and ventilation before anything comes apart.
- DemolitionTile, fixtures and damaged board come out. We check framing and subfloor for rot or moisture damage.
- Rough-in by licensed tradesPlumbing and electrical work is done by licensed specialists and inspected before walls close.
- Backer board and waterproofingTile-rated backer goes up in the wet zones and a continuous waterproofing system is applied. Shower pans are flood-tested before tile.
- Drywall, finish and textureMoisture-resistant board covers the rest of the walls and ceiling; we tape, finish and texture to match the house.
- Tile, fixtures and paintTile and grout are set, then fixtures, glass and mirrors, with mildew-resistant paint on the ceiling and walls.
What drives the cost of a bathroom remodel
Bathrooms are small, but they pack plumbing, electrical and tile into a tight space. Key cost drivers:
Moving fixtures
Relocating a toilet, shower or tub changes the plumbing work and sometimes means cutting into the slab.
Shower type
A custom tile shower with a niche and a glass enclosure costs much more than a prefab insert or a tub-shower combination.
Tile choice and layout
Large-format tile, intricate patterns and tile to the ceiling add material and labor.
Vanity, fixtures and glass
These range from basic to custom and can each change the budget notably.
What demolition reveals
Rot, old leaks and failed waterproofing are common finds that add repair work.
Ventilation upgrades
A properly sized fan with a vent run to the outside may require work in the ceiling and attic.

Questions people ask us
What kind of drywall goes in a bathroom?
Moisture- and mold-resistant board is common on bathroom walls and ceilings outside the wet zone. In the shower or tub surround, tile goes over a cement-board or other tile-rated backer with a waterproofing layer, not over regular drywall. Using the wrong board behind tile is one of the most common causes of failed showers.
Does a bathroom remodel need a new exhaust fan?
Often. A fan that is too small, or one that vents into the attic, leaves moisture in the house and invites mold. Building code requires bath fans to vent to the outside, and the duct run is part of the planning, because it passes through the ceiling we are rebuilding.
How do you test that a new shower will not leak?
A common practice is to fill the shower pan with water and let it stand, typically for a day, before tile goes on, to prove the waterproofing holds. It takes time but costs far less than ripping out finished tile later.
Can you move the toilet or the shower?
Yes, but moving plumbing fixtures changes the plumbing work and may require permits, and on a slab-on-grade house it can mean cutting into the concrete floor. Licensed plumbers do that part; we plan the walls around it. Keeping fixtures where they are saves money.
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
It depends on scope, but waterproofing, tile and grout all need curing time between steps. A cosmetic update is short; a full gut with new plumbing, shower and tile is a multi-trade job with inspections. We will give you a realistic schedule once we see the space.
What about mold already in my bathroom walls?
If we find mold during demolition, small areas can be removed with the damaged board and the cause (a failed shower pan, a leaking line, a bad fan) fixed before closing up. Large areas, roughly over 10 square feet, should go to a professional remediation company.
